Who is Dale Chihuly?

Dale Chihuly is considered to be one of the world’s greatest glass artists! His influence has changed how the art world sees glass, by introducing an infinite variety of colors, large-scale outdoor installations, three-dimensional sculptures. He is a teacher as well as an artist, and you can see the work of many of his own students on display right here!

Let’s meet Dale Chihuly when he was just a kid like you!

Dale grew up like a lot of ordinary kids, but he was particularly fascinated by the shapes and colors he saw in the natural world around him. One of his favorite places to be was in his mother’s garden. Flowers bloomed in all shapes and colors! You can see some of these natural shapes popping up all over the Hot Glass gallery! Another of Dale’s favorite places was the beach. He loved to be around water. The seashells he gathered came in such an amazing variety of forms. Look closely, and you’ll spot many of these shapes in the gallery as

Dale’s interest in the shapes and colors of the world led him to Europe, where he met many other artists. He experimented with all types of art, but the moment he picked up a blowpipe and blew a bubble into a blob of hot glass, he was hooked! He knew that hot glass would be his medium. No other form of art made such beautiful use of color and light!

But Dale still wanted to learn even more about glass! He wrote to famous glass artists all over the world, asking to study with them. Everywhere he went, he learned something new! Importantly, he learned how to work well with a small team of other dedicated glass artists. He found such a team in the studio he established in Seattle, Washington. Sometimes a concept would come to him so suddenly, he’d need to quickly capture the idea in a large drawing or painting. His team learned to turn Dale’s drawings into finished works of glass art!

What makes Dale Chihuly a hero?

Did you notice Dale’s eyepatch? Many years ago, Dale was in a car accident. He lost vision in his left eye. He needed to relearn his craft from scratch. This was a huge setback! But Dale was always courageous. He was never afraid to take risks, to try new things or even to fail! He got right back to work. At first, his work was sloppy-as bad as his very first glass bubble! But Dale learned to adapt, by relying on his inspiration, his drawings and his team of artists. Thanks to his courage and persistence, his fame continued to grow even after this setback!

Now, people all over the world can enjoy Dale’s art. He’s created some of the biggest, most elaborate, and most colorful glass sculptures ever seen! Hundreds of artists study Dale’s art and methods, finding new ways to express their love of light, color and shape through hot glass.

Amazing Fact:

Dale Chihuly attended the Rhode Island School of Design for Interior Design and only took a glassblowing class on a whim!
