Chihuly for Children

Kids in a glass art gallery might remind us of the expression “a bull in a china shop,” but our experience in the Hot Glass Gallery at WMODA proves otherwise. Young children are drawn to the kaleidoscope of colors in Chihuly’s glass art and can discover more about the natural world that inspired his gigantic forms, including flowers, shells and waves. Join the Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum Scavenger Hunt and head to WMODA for more fun!

Scavenger Hunt

Check out the new Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum Scavenger Hunt around Broward County cultural institutions and discover more about Chihuly’s glass art at WMODA. Learn more about our hero and his journey to become the world’s most famous studio glass artist.  We also have a mini scavenger hunt in our Hot Glass Gallery looking for foliate forms in Chihuly’s giant Ikebana flower arrangements.

River of Light and Color

Get creative at WMODA and make a Macchia style artwork to add to our River of Light and Color installation. Our project is inspired by Chihuly’s environmental work in which he masterminded several large-scale outdoor temporary installations. Dozens of colorful, whimsically shaped blown glass floats were released from boats to drift in a river.

Chihuly’s first such installation in Finland was simply titled The Boat, and it featured boats loaded with blown glass forms. After a few days, he decided to release the floats into the water to see how they looked in the environment! The glass floats were a feature of Chihuly Over Venice in 1996 and became known as his Walla Wallas after the large, sweet onions that are Washington State’s official vegetable.

A Flash of Color & Light

Children can learn about Chihuly’s life and achievements in a new biography for aspiring artists ages 5 to 9. In A Flash of Color & Light, young readers will discover how Chihuly overcame many challenges to become an internationally acclaimed artist who changed the way we view the art of glassblowing.

The picture book biography is filled with gorgeous illustrations of Chihuly and his glass art by Shelley Couvillion. The story of Chihuly’s artistic career celebrating family, friendship, teamwork and resilience is told by Sharon Mentyka, a children’s writer who explores the complicated path to finding your own voice.

For over 50 years, Dale has pursued his brilliant career inspired by his colorful, light-filled world and pushing the boundaries of glass as an art form. A Flash of Color and Light is vibrant with Chihuly’s curiosity, discovery and dreams. The book is published by Little Bigfoot, an imprint of Sasquatch Books in the Growing to Greatness Series.
