Unity in the Community at WMODA
Join us on Saturday, May 17 at 2:00 pm to celebrate Chelsea Rousso’s Unity in the Community installation at WMODA. For the last two years, Chelsea has been introducing fused glass art to a whole new audience. One of her workshops was held at WMODA before the museum reopened and Unity in the Community now has pride of place at the entrance to the museum’s Hot Glass Gallery. Come and toast Chelsea’s remarkable achievement. Free Museum admission is offered that day to everyone whose artwork is hanging on the WMODA wall.

Thanks to grants from Broward Cultural Division, more than 150 local people had the opportunity to make a fused glass art icon symbolizing their idea of community and unity. Most had never worked with glass before and they learned how to design and cut glass for kiln-firing by Chelsea. Everybody had a story to tell about what unity and community meant to them and the workshop conversations were lively and inspirational.

The unveiling of the first Unity in the Community installation was at the Plunge Beach Resort in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, which fosters community through their Plunge into the Arts programs. Chelsea also created a public art project with Unity in the Community for the city of Tamarac and the resulting installation is now hanging in their community center.

The goal is for this rewarding project to grow with many more people having the opportunity to work with fused glass art for the first time. WMODA can provide an inspirational environment for the workshops to take place, so let us know if you would like to help sponsor Chelsea’s ongoing creative arts program so that the community’s wall of glass can be expanded.
Friends and family are also welcome to the Unity in the Community celebration at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 17, which is included with regular museum admission.
